What's the best way to expand the waist of dress slacks?

I have job interview this week and I'm 2 inches too fat for my suit pants. There is no time for professional alterations. Can I just cut some of the threads in the back seam of the pants waist to loosen the waist and then just use a belt to keep the pants up? My will be covered by a suit jacket anyway. Any suggestions?
