Puerto Vallarta Shopping/Spending Money?

coming to PV in May& have gotten conflicting advice on shopping/spending money. Some say change all to Mexican, some say dollars are fine for tips and most shopping, others say only take small amt of cash and use Visa...Help! Has anyone been there recently that can advise?
